Costing Environmental Damage

Offwat should take into account the environmental damage/cost of water abstraction when setting the prices for the water companies. This would allow the companies to charge higher prices and use the money to obtain water from a more sustainable source even if it costs more. Under the present system the companies are encouraged to obtain water as cheaply as possible even if by so doing they damage fragile chalk rivers by reducing flow at crtical periods of the year.

Why the contribution is important

The present system does not adequately value environmental damage in the quest for cheap water supplies. The result is over abstraction of fragile chalk aquifers.

drinking water supplied for the PWS is under valued by the consumer because it is not expensive and often unmetered.
It is not cheap exercise to supply EU standard drinking water to a house hold tap - where 97% does not get consumed by drinking - that % needs to be lowered..
