Making PEDv notifiable will help identify outbreaks quickly

Although some diseases have been managed a voluntary approach each disease is different.

PEDv  is  highly infectious and easily spread so it is imperative that all pig producers actively engage and report any sign of the disease promptly. Key industry bodies believe that legislating to make PEDv a notifiable disease in England is the most effective way of helping to control any disease incursion

    Lessons learnt from USA and Canada show that speed and prompt action are essential. This coordinated initiative will offer the best chance we have of achieving both

    I concur with R. Longthorpe,
    PEDv is incredibly virulent, if it does arrive on our shores prompt action will be imperative in stamping it out.

    However well prepared an industry claims to be, a major disease outbreak will cause huge damage to very many businesses. The UK pig sector is probably as well briefed as it could be so making PEDv notifiable will mean the best chance of ongoing vigilance and if reported will have maximum impact on speedy containment.
