Make it notifiable, but don't restrict research by making it more than a Class II pathogen

PEDV strains similar to those circulating in the USA have also been identified in other European Countries (see latest publication from FLI in Germany, for example), and it seems that some PEDV strains are more or less endemic. The reason behind the huge outbreaks in the USA are clearly within the housing conditions there. Thus, making PEDV a notifiable disease is a very good idea, but it should not hamper research on this porcine corona-virus, for which we still lack a substantial amount of understanding. It should be possible to work with such a virus, given all the history, in a "normal" class II lab.

Why the contribution is important

We have too little understanding why apparently identical strains cause disease in the USA, but not in other parts of the world. Research such not be restricted to specific institutions, given the general cuts in veterinary-related research funding.
