Does notifiable mean culling our rare breeds

Culling is not seen as the way to deal with this disease and would only be used in very special circumstances e.g. if the disease was found in imported pigs in quarantine. The biggest threat to our native breeds is the disease itself. Very high levels of mortality in piglets would be devastating for producers.

Why the contribution is important

This is important because rare breed keepers have the most to lose from exotic disease. They cannot easily replace unique genetic resources. We must do all we can to protect our rare breeds and that means dealing with the disease as effectively as possible.
